How to clean moisture stains by capillarity

Barrier against moisture problems due to capillarity and saltpetre

In this post we are going to see one of the most common problems caused by humidity inside houses, nitrate stains caused by humidity due to capillary action. And by the way we will see a product that will help us to treat this problem.

capillary humidity

One of the most frequent problems related to humidity are those nitrate stains that appear due to humidity due to capillary action. What happens is that the water goes up through the pores of the materials and on its way dissolves the mineral salts of the cement and even of the mass that is used in the plasters.

When this moisture with the dissolved mineral salts reaches the interior surface of the walls of the house, it evaporates, the dissolved mineral salts crystallize, and as they grow they deteriorate the paint and even deteriorate the plasters. This problem usually appears in the lower part of the walls, causing a bulging and a very visible deterioration of the paint layers and the crystallized salts are distinguished. Therefore, it is very easy to differentiate this problem from that caused by mold.

The first thing we should do is use a spatula and a brush to scratch and remove all the loose paint and the plaster that is in poor condition, until you get a firm surface. Then clean the entire surface well with a mixture of water and vinegar. This will help remove any remaining salt residue on the wall. Thus, with the surface already clean, I can apply Xylazel anti-humidity barrier solutions, a product that protects against moisture due to capillary action and against leakage.

This is a two-component product, so I have to mix the two components that come in the package in equal parts. I have to homogenize the mixture well and apply a brush or roller. I let the product dry for two hours and apply a second coat. This will protect against moisture due to capillary action, but because we scratch the surface and even remove part of the plaster, after applying (and letting dry) the moisture barrier it may be necessary to plaster the repaired surface to leave a smooth surface before painting. . In these cases, it is recommended to use a product of the same brand.
