Router insert plates

Router insert plates are an accessory that can be essential for any small woodworking or DIY workshop that uses routers.

These plates serve as a support for the router and allow it to be mounted under a workbench, transforming it into a router table or a small spindle molder, providing a more effective way to work with the router and adding precision when performing certain routing tasks, mainly on the edges of wood or other material pieces.

What is a Router Insert Plate?

A router insert plate is a sturdy metal or plastic plate that is installed on a router table. The router is mounted underneath, screwed to this plate, allowing the bit to protrude through a hole in the center of the plate. This setup also makes it easy to create a router table very inexpensively.

Types of Insert Plates

1. Universal Plates

These plates are designed to fit a wide variety of router models. They are ideal if you have several routers or plan to change models in the future. The spacing between the mounting holes is usually standard to be screwed to the base of many router models.

We must check and ensure that the distance between holes on the router insert plate we are going to buy matches the distance between the holes on our router base. Note that sometimes the spacing between the holes on one side or the other of the router base, and the insert plate, can vary slightly.

The insert plates I have are from the European market. Keep in mind that those sold in the American market might have slightly different measurements even if they are the same models. Always check the measurements before making a purchase.

2. Plates with Starter Pin

These insert plates include a starter pin and the threaded hole to install it when needed. When working freehand with a bearing bit installed in the router, having the starter pin allows us to work more safely, first resting the workpiece against the starter pin and then safely moving it towards the bit.

3. Plates with Reducer Rings

Some plates come with interchangeable reducer rings that allow adjusting the size of the central hole to accommodate different bit diameters. The reducer rings can improve the quality of the cut made by the bit, resulting in cleaner and less splintered edges. Additionally, in some types of routing with a side guide, it can also improve the efficiency of the dust extraction connected to the side guide.

How to Choose the Right Insert Plate

1. Compatibility

Make sure the plate is compatible with your router model. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and verify the dimensions and layout of the mounting holes.

2. Material

Insert plates are usually made of aluminum or high-strength plastic. Aluminum plates are durable and offer excellent stability, while phenolic and plastic plates are more economical and lightweight.

3. Additional Features

Consider purchasing a plate with additional features such as reducer rings, engraved measuring scales, starter pin, leveling screws, included side guide, hole for operating lift systems, deals on plate and lift system sets…

4. Ease of Installation

Opt for a plate that is easy to install and adjust. Clear instructions and included mounting accessories can make a big difference. Also, consider selecting a router support plate with holes at the correct distance for your router.

Note that in some cases, the included screws may not be the most suitable, as they are sometimes too long and do not fit well into the blind holes of the router base or protrude below the plate, causing the plate not to rest properly on the router base.
