Forstner bits for wood
The curious name of these drill bits is due to the surname of their inventor, Benjamin Forstner (1834 – 1897). Back in 1874, he patented his Forstner bit, which was designed to drill flat-bottomed blind holes in wood with smooth vertical sides (they leave a small hole in the center of the bottom of the large hole they make, which corresponds to the centering point of the bit).
